# Link records with Link fields

> Add a Link field to a template, then link a record to another object, or to a list of objects, on the web and in the iOS app

A Link field links a record to another object in the same job. A new pole can point at the plant pole it replaces, or a customer site at its address. One Link field links to one object, or to a list of objects. It can accept objects of one template, or of any template.

## Add a Link field to a template

1. Open the template and add a field, or select one.
2. Open **Type & capture**.
3. Set **Type**:
   * `object` links to one object.
   * `array`, then choose `object` for what the list holds, links to a list of objects.
4. Under **Links to**, choose the template the field links to, or **Any object** to accept an object of any template.
5. Save the template.

The map's own relations, such as a guy's pole or a span's poles, are not Link fields. They keep their own map tools.

## Link on the web

Select the record on the utility map and find the field in its panel. An empty Link field shows **Link**.

**1. Open Link**

Click **Link**. A search opens, limited to the field's template. With nothing typed, it lists the job's objects under **Nearest**, closest first, with distances in the configuration's unit. The first rows are numbered, and the same numbers appear as pins on the map.

**2. Choose the object**

Do one of these:

* Click a row, or click a numbered pin on the map.
* Search by tag, label, address or any field, then click a result.
* Click **Pick on map**, then click the object on the map. Only objects of the field's template are accepted. Press **Esc** to cancel.
* Click **Create new** to place a new object of that template. It is linked and the form opens again. For an **Any object** field, choose which kind of object first. Press **Esc** to create nothing.

Nothing is linked until you choose.

Once linked, the field shows one card per linked object. The object's name is in bold on the first line, and the field it was linked through is on the second line. Click the card to open the linked object. Its panel starts with **Back to …**, which returns you to where you were without moving the map.

While the record is selected, leader lines run on the map to each linked object. They are curved and dashed, so they never look like a span.

At the end of the linked object's panel, **Linked from · N** lists every object that links to it.

## Link on iOS

The iOS app links the same way and shows the same cards.

1. Tap **Link** on the field.
2. Search, tap **Pick on Map**, or tap **Create New …**. Search matches the label, IQGeo id, tag, name or address.
3. The object you chose is shown on the map. Tap **Link 00001** (the button names the object) to save the link.

Tap a linked card to open the object, and **‹ Back to …** to return.

## List links

A list Link field shows one row per linked object, each with **Unlink**. **Add link…** opens the same search to add another. Objects already in the list, and the record itself, are left out of the search.

## Unlink

Click or tap **Unlink** next to the linked object. The field is cleared. In a list, only that object is removed. Removing the last one clears the field.

## How a linked object is named

Everywhere, a linked object is named by:

1. the template's map label field, the same label the map shows;
2. if it has none, the last five characters of its IQGeo id, for example `00001`;
3. otherwise the last five characters of its Cloneable id.
