# Trace a line

> Open spans, place attachments from your catalog and land every wire from pole to pole

You trace on the job's map. Each pole and midspan you open shows as a card with its photo, and the bar at the bottom of the map guides you through the steps.

## 1. Start tracing

Open the job on the map and click **Trace wires** in the map toolbar (the cable icon). If it's greyed out, select a single job first.

The bar at the bottom shows a four-step guide: **Open a pole or span**, **Annotate a pole**, **Open the next pole** and **Land each wire**. Hide it with its close button; click **?** in the bar to bring it back.

## 2. Open a pole or span

Click a pole to open its card, or click a span line to open both of its poles and the midspans between them. Click a pole again to close its card.

> [!TIP]
>
> Opening the span is the quickest way to work: both poles and the midspan photos are side by side.

## 3. Annotate the first pole

Mark what's on the pole on its measurement photo.

**1. Tap the photo where an attachment is**

A picker asks **What is at this point?** and lists your catalog's categories. Type to search, or press a number key to pick a category.

**2. Pick the part**

Choose the part from your catalog, such as a specific crossarm, insulator or conductor. Parts come from your configuration's pick list, so they match your SPIDAcalc client file.

**3. Add what hangs from it**

Tap the insulators on the arm, then the wire on each insulator. Each pin nests under the one it attaches to.

Two shortcuts in the picker save time:

* **Framings** (press **F**): place a whole framing from your catalog, then tap each of its parts in turn. Shown when your catalog includes framings.
* **Presets** (press **P**): stamp a saved stack of attachments in one go. To save one, choose **Save assembly as preset** while placing. Presets are shared across your organization.

Click a pin to open its panel: change its part or details, delete it, or press **Done** (or **Enter**) to close it.

> [!NOTE]
>
> On calibrated photos with heights turned on, each pin gets its height as you place it. If a pin has no height, calibrate the photo or set the height by hand in the pin's panel.

## 4. Land each wire on the next pole

With both poles open, the next pole's card says **Tap where each wire lands**, and its header shows how many wires are waiting.

**1. Tap where the wire attaches**

Tap the next pole's photo at the insulator or attachment point the wire runs to. Colored rings suggest the pin for each waiting wire, in the same order as the pole before.

**2. Confirm where it lands**

If Cloneable needs to know more, a menu asks **Where does it land?** or offers to **Carry onto** this pole the arm and wires from the last pole, with the **Arm type at this pole** if it's different hardware.

**3. Repeat for every wire**

The count goes down as you land each wire. When the step reads **Every wire landed**, this segment is done.

If the arm or framing isn't on this pole yet, the card says **Tap the framing, then each wire**: your first tap places the arm, then you tap each wire.

In the menu for a waiting wire, two buttons handle wires that don't land here:

* **Passes**: the wire runs past this pole without attaching and carries on to the next pole.
* **Not this way**: the wire doesn't run toward this pole. It stops being offered here and keeps its other directions.

## 5. Tap wires on midspan photos

Midspan cards say **Tap where each wire crosses**. Tap each wire where it crosses on the midspan photo. Cloneable works out each wire's midspan height and saves it with the wire.

## 6. Walk to the next segment

Click **Next segment** in the bottom bar. Cloneable checks every wire in this segment is traced through the midspans and landed on the end pole, then moves the cards to the next pole along the line.

If something is missing, you see **Not fully traced** with the wires that have gaps. Choose **Keep tracing** to fix them, or **Continue anyway** to move on.

The bar shows your progress, such as **12 of 40 poles** and **Segment 3 of 18**. Use **Back** to step back a segment.

## 7. End a line

Where a wire really ends, such as on a dead-end, open the pin and click **Line ends here**. The wire stops carrying to later segments. To undo it, open the pin and click **Ends here · continue it**.

## Undo and saving

* **Undo** in the bottom bar takes back your last change, one step at a time. Hover it to see what it will undo. The shortcut is **Cmd+Z** on Mac or **Ctrl+Z** on Windows.
* Your work **saves automatically** a few seconds after you stop, and when you leave tracing. The bar shows **Saved**, **Unsaved changes** or **Saving…**.
* If you see **Not saved, retrying**, keep the tab open; Cloneable tries again. If you see **Saved tracing didn't load**, click **Try again** before making changes.

## Leave tracing

Open **More** in the bottom bar:

* **End walk** stops stepping through the line and keeps your cards open.
* **Close cards** closes the open cards (or press **Esc**).
* **Exit tracing** goes back to the regular map. Your traces are saved.
